This week underground
Victoria has a thermometer out, which is usually a bad sign for whoever is sitting across from her! Meanwhile, The First Sky has a government employee narrating rock formations to a woman who would very much like him to answer a different question. Both rooms have perfectly serviceable equipment. Everyone involved should be worried!
Give an object something to do
A government elevator can be frightening before anything reaches through the ceiling. In The First Sky, Maren rides one for eleven minutes. She counts. Bryson describes the geology. The handrail has been cleaned, and it is still cold under her hand.
That gives the room a procedure! Somebody maintains the elevator. Somebody trained the escort. Somebody decided what information Maren should hear on the way down, and apparently limestone made the list. The scene gets to show how the Bureau handles her without pausing for a history of the Bureau.
Victoria’s ninth chapter uses a much smaller movement. She shifts a lamp six inches so she can watch an eye. She sets out a thermometer and a stopwatch. Then she chooses what to say to the man in the chair because she wants to produce a response she can measure.
The reader can follow each decision. There is a reason for the lamp’s position, a place for the instrument, and a blank in the journal waiting for an answer. She has arranged the room before he knows what she intends to do. By the time she calls him in, the furniture is already helping her!
For a revision pass, try following one object through a scene. Who puts it there? Who can reach it? Does somebody move it when the conversation changes? A coat hanging by the door can become a decision to leave. A hand on that coat can delay the decision. You can keep the same room and change what the people in it are able to do.
For another exercise in making one physical detail carry the danger, try When the Sun Is the Threat.
Then check the explanation after the action. If a character has moved the light, chosen the question, and opened the journal, the reader has quite a lot to work with already. Let them sit with what she has prepared. Victoria certainly has!
